But ML isn’t standing still – the field is in a state of constant evolution. In recent years, it has progressed rapidly, largely thanks to improvements in data gathering, processing power, and the development of more sophisticated algorithms. 

Now, as we enter the second half of 2023, these technological advancements have paved the way for new and exciting trends in machine learning. These trends not only reflect the ongoing advancement in machine learning technology but also highlight its growing accessibility and the increasingly crucial role of ethics in its applications. From no-code machine learning to tinyML, these seven trends are worth watching in 2023. 

1. Automated Machine Learning 

Automated machine learning, or AutoML, is one of the most significant machine learning trends we’re witnessing. Roughly 61% of decision makers in companies utilizing AI said they’ve adopted autoML, and another 25% were planning to implement it that year. This innovation is reshaping the process of building ML models by automating some of its most complex aspects.

AutoML is not about eliminating the need for coding, as is the case with no-code ML platforms. Instead, AutoML focuses on the automation of tasks that often require a high level of expertise and a significant time investment. These tasks include data preprocessing, feature selection, and hyperparameter tuning, to name a few.

In a typical machine learning project, these steps are performed manually by engineers or data scientists who have to iterate several times to optimize the model. However, AutoML can help automate these steps, thereby saving time and effort and allowing employees to focus on higher-level problem-solving.

Furthermore, AutoML can provide significant value to non-experts or those who are in the early stages of their ML journey. By removing some of the complexities associated with ML, AutoML allows these individuals to leverage the power of machine learning without needing a deep understanding of every intricate detail.

2. Tiny Machine Learning 

Tiny machine learning, commonly known as TinyML, is another significant trend that’s worth our attention. It’s predicted that tinyML device installs will increase from nearly 2 billion in 2022 to over 11 billion in 2027. Driving this trend is tinyML’s power to bring machine learning capabilities to small, low-power devices, often referred to as edge devices.

The idea behind TinyML is to run machine learning algorithms on devices with minimal computational resources, such as microcontrollers in small appliances, wearable devices, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. This represents a shift away from cloud-based computation toward local, on-device computation, providing benefits such as speed, privacy, and reduced power consumption.

It’s also worth mentioning that TinyML opens up opportunities for real-time, on-device decision making. For instance, a wearable health tracker could leverage TinyML to analyze a user’s vital signs and alert them to abnormal readings without the need to constantly communicate with the cloud, thereby saving bandwidth and preserving privacy.

3. Generative AI

Generative AI has dominated the headlines in 2023. Since the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, we’ve seen a wave of new generative AI technologies from major tech companies like Microsoft, Google, Adobe, Qualcomm, as well as countless other innovations from companies of every size. These sophisticated models have unlocked unprecedented possibilities in numerous fields, from art and design to data augmentation and beyond.

Generative AI, as a branch of machine learning, is focused on creating new content. It’s akin to giving an AI a form of imagination. These algorithms, through various techniques, learn the underlying patterns of the data they are trained on and can generate new, original content that mirrors those patterns.

Perhaps the most renowned form of generative AI is the generative adversarial network (GAN). GANs work by pitting two neural networks against each other — a generator network that creates new data instances, and a discriminator network that attempts to determine whether the data is real or artificial. The generator continuously improves its outputs in an attempt to fool the discriminator, resulting in the creation of incredibly realistic synthetic data.

However, the field has expanded beyond just GANs. Other approaches, such as variational autoencoders (VAEs) and transformer-based models, have shown impressive results. For example, VAEs are now being used in fields like drug discovery, where they generate viable new molecular structures. Transformer-based models, inspired by architectures like GPT-3 (now GPT-4), are being used to generate human-like text, enabling more natural conversational AI experiences.

Interest in and demand for AI technology, combined with a growing AI skills gap, has driven more and more companies toward no-code machine learning solutions. These platforms are revolutionizing the field by making machine learning more accessible to a wider audience, including those without a background in programming or data science.

No-code platforms are designed to enable users to build, train, and deploy machine learning models without writing any code. They typically feature intuitive, visual interfaces where users can manipulate pre-built components and utilize established machine learning algorithms.

5. Ethical and Explainable Machine Learning

Another crucial machine learning trend in 2023 that needs highlighting is the increasing focus on ethical and explainable machine learning. As machine learning models become more pervasive in our society, understanding how they make their decisions and ensuring those decisions are made ethically has become paramount.

Explainable machine learning, often known as interpretable machine learning or explainable AI (XAI), is about developing models that make transparent, understandable predictions. Traditional machine learning models, especially complex ones like deep neural networks, are often seen as “black boxes” because their internal workings are difficult to understand. XAI aims to make the decision-making process of these models understandable to humans.

As these models are increasingly used to make decisions that directly affect people’s lives, such as loan approvals, medical diagnoses, or job applications, it’s important that we understand how they’re making those decisions and that we can trust their accuracy and fairness.

It also involves thinking about the potential implications and consequences of these models, including how they could be misused.

The central goal of MLOps is to bridge the gap between the development of machine learning models and their operation in production environments. This involves creating a robust pipeline that enables fast, automated, and reproducible production of models, incorporating steps like data collection, model training, validation, deployment, monitoring, and more.

One significant aspect of MLOps is the focus on automation. By automating repetitive and time-consuming tasks in the ML lifecycle, MLOps can drastically accelerate the time from model development to deployment. It also ensures consistency and reproducibility, reducing the chances of errors and discrepancies.

Another important facet of MLOps is monitoring. It’s not enough to simply deploy a model; ongoing monitoring of its performance is crucial. MLOps encourages the continuous tracking of model metrics to ensure they’re performing as expected and to catch and address any drift or degradation in performance quickly.

In 2023, the growing emphasis on MLOps is a testament to the maturing field of machine learning. As organizations aim to leverage machine learning at scale, efficient and effective operational processes are more crucial than ever. MLOps represents a significant step forward in the journey toward operationalizing machine learning in a sustainable, scalable, and reliable manner.

7. Multimodal Machine Learning

The final trend that’s getting attention in the machine learning field in 2023 is multimodal machine learning. As the name suggests, multimodal machine learning refers to models that can process and interpret multiple types of data — such as text, images, audio, and video — in a single model.

Traditional machine learning models typically focus on one type of data. For example, natural language processing models handle text, while convolutional neural networks are great for image data. However, real-world data often comes in various forms, and valuable information can be extracted when these different modalities are combined.

3 developments in HackerRank AI

1 – AI-Powered Plagiarism Detection is live

HackerRank’s industry-first AI-powered plagiarism detection system is live and available to all HackerRank customers. By analyzing dozens of unique signals, our new plagiarism detection model detects suspicious activity with far greater reliability and fewer false positives than industry standard methods, like MOSS code similarity

2 – AI is about to make hiring teams’ lives easier

Several upcoming platform features promise to make hiring teams’ lives a bit easier. For example, AI will soon be able to review candidate code quality across several metrics such as efficiency and modularity, and provide a rationale for its analysis. AI will also be able to help members of the interview team provide more accurate interview summaries faster, using transcripts to build a first draft that can be refined before submission. 

3 – AI is coming to the assessment experience

HackerRank customers are fairly divided on AI’s role in assessments. Some want—or need—to keep AI at arm’s length. Others want to use it, and want to see how their candidates use it. To allow companies to embrace AI on their own terms, we’re building AI assistance into the assessment experience. Furthermore, the AI assistance will be highly customizable, from limited AI that can onboard a candidate to a codebase, to fully open AI that can engage in pair programming and code generation. 

At the end of the discussion, we held a live Q&A to chat through questions from the audience. Here are five of the top questions we heard—and how we’re thinking about them in response.

1 – Is ChatGPT ready for primetime code complexity?

Base ChatGPT, the GPT-3.5 Turbo model, is not as good for programming. But GPT-4, Bard, and Anthropic’s models are getting to a place where they’re real coding helpers as you’re building software. 

Teams still need human creativity and developers who understand code, but AI can help take care of some of the more tedious tasks. For example, if you wrote a piece of a function and you want it to do error handling, you can have ChatGPT manage that for you. Of course you still need to review it, because you’re ultimately responsible for deploying it in production. But it can be a great assistant and enhance productivity.

2 – Can you talk more about plagiarism detection and 93% reliability? How do you check false positives? How do you even get that information? And has any other third party validated these claims?

The system has been in limited availability and we’ve run thousands of tests to make sure the system is performing at the level that we’re claiming. We’re also looking at feedback  from customers who’ve been using this product, and that feedback’s been really amazing. So that’s really where we are coming from when we define that internal benchmark. 

We’ve also been audited by an external third party, because it does come under the purview of the NYC law. We’ve gone through the audit process, so the system is ready for you to use. 

3 – HackerRank’s plagiarism detection system will get better over time because it’s built on AI. Can you talk more about that?

These systems are built with training data. Imagine when you’re a kid. How do you learn things? Someone shows you an image of an apple and tells you it’s an apple. Teachers give you a lot of examples and a label, and you start building associations, so you can recognize an apple.

This is how AI models learn, as well. Only they’re not as good at it as humans. We just need to see a thing one or two times, and we’ve got it. I could show you any apple, and you’ll identify it with very high accuracy. AI systems need a lot more data. So in this case, they would need a lot more images to make an accurate, reliable prediction. 

When we say the system gets better over time, this is what we mean. The more customers use it, the more feedback they provide, the more training data the system can ingest, further increasing its accuracy.

4 – Lots of people are interested in the interview assistant. What does that look like in the long term? Is this something you see integrating into an ATS?

Yes. Over the long term, we want to get to where the interview assistant does most of the work, and where we’re delivering it to you in your ATS. We don’t want AI making decisions, so imagine this more like AI doing 80-90% of the work for you, compiling the summary that you’d have to spend an hour doing. Now you would be spending 10 minutes reviewing it, making any changes, and then submitting it. 

But we absolutely imagine the system becoming way more integrated into the workflow than it is now, depending on what ATS you’re using.

5 – How does AI in advanced plagiarism handle copy/paste? Are there any plans to disable that functionality altogether?

No, there are no plans to disable copy/paste. I don’t think that’s something we’d ever want to do. To bring a little more clarity, you can’t copy questions. So when you talk about copy/paste, it’s really in the editor window. We provide a proctoring feature that’s essentially copy/paste tracking. And just because someone pasted, doesn’t mean they plagiarized. It’s just one of the signals the model considers. 

For example, someone might be solving a program question, but forgot how to insert a key in a Python dictionary. Simple, basic things just become signals into the model. What we’re really looking for are large patterns of cheating behavior. Is the full solution being pasted in? Or large chunks of code? So whether copy/paste triggers a plagiarism flag depends on the context of how much was copy/pasted and what was copy/pasted.

While AI can help minimize unconscious bias, if the algorithms are trained on biased historical data, the AI can unintentionally perpetuate these biases. The prospect of using AI tools to generate code solutions isn’t far-fetched — it’s already happening. In fact, more than 80% of developers are already experimenting with AI products. And 55% are already using AI assistants at work.

So, with the use of AI coding tools so widespread, it’s likely that some candidates will seek outside help from these tools during coding tests. As such, employers are increasingly turning to strategies and technologies that can detect the use of AI coding tools and uphold the integrity and fairness of their technical assessments.

In particular, we’re seeing a new suite of plagiarism detection tools emerge as well. Also powered by AI, these tools utilize dozens of proctoring and user signals, like tab switching and copying/pasting, to maintain the integrity and fairness of coding assessments.

It’s also important to note that coding tests don’t merely evaluate a candidate’s ability to write functional code. They assess a candidate’s problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and understanding of algorithms and data structures. While AI might generate a piece of code, it cannot replicate the problem-solving process or the unique thought process of a developer.

Furthermore, many coding tests include live coding sessions or pair programming where a candidate’s thought process and problem-solving approach are evaluated in real time. Cheating in such a setting using AI would be extremely difficult.

#5. Should Recruiters Be Afraid of AI—or Embrace It?

As the impact of AI continues to grow, workers in every industry are likely to feel a sense of apprehension. And tech recruiting will be no exception.

Will AI replace recruiters? Should they be worried about their future in the industry? While it’s difficult to predict the future, all signs point to no.

AI is not here to replace recruiters but to assist them. It’s a tool that automates repetitive tasks, streamlines the recruitment process, and offers data-driven insights — all of which help recruiters, not hinder them.

On one hand, this means that, with every passing minute, there is more data available to us than ever before. But for businesses and organizations eager to derive meaning and insights from this data, it can present an overwhelming challenge. 

Consider the fact that 80 to 90% of this data is unstructured, meaning it doesn’t fit into tidy rows and columns on a spreadsheet and can’t be stored in a traditional relational database. Unstructured data is amorphous, often language- and text-heavy, and much more difficult for computers to process.

But as artificial intelligence technology has continued to advance in recent years, so too has our ability to make sense of all this unstructured data.
